It's safe to say the retired National Geographic photographer Chuck O'Rear is the world's most anonymous celebrity. His life work, the peaceful desktop background image Bliss, has been seen on computer screens everywhere from Nepal to the White House.
Now 21 years after the iconic photo was taken, he has made a new tribute to the magic that is American nature. But this time it's for a screen we use more than 264 times a day on average: the smartphone.

Fly to San Fransisco with Lufthansa. Drive to Jacob Lake, Arizona and continue to White Pocket. Drive time: 13.5 hours.

On a 3000-meter level you will find this
jaw dropping view hiding in the woods. The absolute best time to come here is at dawn, just in time for when the sun reaches the mountaintops and paints them bright red for 15 minutes. Don’t forget your water bottle, high altitudes make you thirsty.

Peek-A-Boo Slot by Chuck O´Rear
“Is this place even real?” are five words you will repeatedly hear coming out of your mouth if you pay this dramatic place a visit. Getting here equals some rock climbing and hiking so don’t forget to pack your comfiest shoes.

A winner will be chosen no later than the 31st of January 2018 and will receive a trip for two including: Lufthansa flight tickets, accommodation in California, car rental and a photo training session with Chuck O´Rear.

The winner and a friend will fly Lufthansa Economy Class to and from LAX, California. They will get to stay at the Joshua Tree House* for 7 nights and drive a rental car during the entire trip. On top of that they will get to meet the man behind the Bliss photo: Chuck O’Rear, for a 3 hour long photo training session.

Terms and conditions
Article 1: General information
The Competition ’New Angles of America' (hereafter referred to as 'the Competition') is hosted by Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Von-Gablenz-Str. 2-6, 50679 Cologne, Germany (hereafter referred to as 'Lufthansa'). Participation is voluntary and free of charge. Participation is not dependent on the purchase of goods or services.
Article 2: Duration, aim, and location of the competition
The Competition is organised for the purpose of promoting the services, destinations, and heritage of Lufthansa.
The Competition will be hosted in Sweden and is open for citizens all over the world (except for people living in the US) during the period from 14 November 2017 until 18 December 2017 inclusive (until 23:59). Participants living in the US may still submit but will not be eligible to win.
Article 3: Promotional area
Promotional online material will be available on the official competition website: www.newanglesofamerica.com
Article 4: Prize fund
The prize fund consists of one prize given according to the ranking scheme prescribed in Article 7.
Prize:
- Two (2) return flight tickets in Lufthansa Economy Class to LAX, USA.
- Accommodation in one standard double room for seven (7) nights.
- Car rental during seven (7) days.
- A ”meet and greet” photo session with the photographer, Chuck O'Rear (3h).
The prize does not include any transfer services to/from airports, hotel or any other accommodation etc. except for what is included in the above.
The specific accommodation described on the campaign site is subject to change as availability cannot be guaranteed.
Prizes cannot be exchanged for money or other products and/or services.
Article 5: Eligibility
Participants must be 20 years or older to be eligible. Each participant can only contest once.
The employees of Lufthansa and members of their immediate families (parents, spouses, children, siblings) are exempt from entering and do not have the right to participate in the competition.
In addition, entering this competition requires the following warranty from you:
- You are not a public official.
- Your employer´s internal rules/policies allow you to participate in the raffle, i.e. prior consent has been given.
- You are not currently negotiating a contract with the Lufthansa Group on behalf of your employer or a third party.
If any manipulative or disruptive behaviour is suspected on the part of a participant, Lufthansa reserves the right to exclude the respective participant from the Competition.
Article 6: How to participate in the Competition
To enter the competition you need to download one (1) of the three (3) background images (shot by Chuck O'Rear). Upload the image to your Instagram account with a caption saying why you want to go to that specific location in the US. Tag (@) Lufthansa and the friend you’d like to bring together with the hashtag #newanglesofamerica.
Any descriptions consisting of immoral, unethical, racist, pornographic, discriminatory or criminal content are prohibited. Lufthansa will exclude the participant from the Competition without warning.
Your entry is only valid at the time Lufthansa receives it. Incomplete and invalid entries will not be accepted. If your entry for some reason is not registered or doesn’t arrive for any other reason, this can not be blamed on the Lufthansa.
In case of circumstances out of the Lufthansa’s control, the dates for the promotion might have to be extended (e.g. if the competition entry page is unavailable for 24 hours or more). Contestants will be informed if this situation occurs.
Article 7: Selection of winner
The winner will be selected by a panel of judges organised by Lufthansa based on the most convincing motivation. The judges will review all eligible entries, and then select the best, most relevant overall entry (motivations will be ranked based on level of creativity showcased). One winner will be chosen.
The winner will be chosen between the end date of the competition and 31st of January 2018. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. A winner will be announced (no later than the 31st of January 2018) via Instagram DM (direct message).
Lufthansa reserves the right to disqualify any entrant who has engaged in unlawful or improper conduct that is designed to jeopardise the fair conduct of the promotion or is generally damaging to the reputation of Lufthansa, or has otherwise breached these conditions of entry (as determined in the Lufthansa’s sole discretion).
Lufthansa can cancel or modify the promotion if there are compelling technical or administrative reasons out of control of the Sponsor. In such a situation, Lufthansa will select the winner from all eligible entries received at that time.
The winner is not able to exchange his/her prize for cash or any other products and services. The prize is not transferrable.
The winner will be responsible for all taxes, insurance, and any other expenses, fees and costs connected with the prize that are not included in the prize description.
The winner is responsible for holding a valid passport and/or other necessary travel documentation and visas.
Please note that the nature of the prize may be such that it poses health or safety risks, or risks normally associated with travel. For this reason, the winner should consider any health, safety and travel risks and take appropriate precautions (including arranging insurances) to guard against those risks.
Article 8: How to claim the prize
The winner will be contacted, via Instagram DM (direct message) between the end date of the competition and 31st of January 2018.
The winner will be asked to give his/her email address and then get information on how to claim his/her prize via email.
If the winner does not confirm receipt of the Instagram DM or the information e-mail within three (3) weeks, the prize will be given to another participant with the next closest jury ranking.
The winner must select three (3) alternative periods for the travel, in order for Lufthansa to confirm Charles’ availability and the availability of the hotel. Once his and the hotels’ availability is confirmed, the winner can request his/her flight ticket. The winner has to make the flight reservation 60 days in advance of the date of travel.
The winner of the prize will be able to book their tickets until the 31st of July 2018 from the date of the winner’s proclamation. Travel should be completed before the end of 2018.
The tickets will be subject to availability. Therefore a reservation on the requested dates cannot be guaranteed. The ticket(s) will be issued as an etix (electronic ticket).
Article 9: Participants of the competition
Participants who take part in the Competition may not request a different prize other than that listed in these Terms and Conditions by the organiser. By participating in this Competition, participants accept these Terms and Conditions.
Article 10: Errors and irregular registrations
Incorrect or incomplete registrations are invalid and not entitled to receive any awards. Only adult participants (over 20 years of age) are eligible to win a prize. Incorrect registrations are ones whose name, surname and other data is incorrect or does not correspond to the actual name and surname on their passport or ID card. Submissions posted on any other platform than Instagram will not be considered part of the Competition and will be treated as an irregular application. Lufthansa has the right to exclude any participant from the Competition if there is any reasonable doubt that the participant is using unverified participation methods.
Article 11: Publicity/Announcement of the winner
The participants agree that the submitted content within the microsite and that information submitted can be used for any marketing purposes in all territories in perpetuity without any royalty or licensing fees. The participants agree that the name of the Competition winner will be published within the microsite and that information submitted can be used for any marketing purposes in all territories in perpetuity without any royalty or licensing fees.
Article 12: Exclusion of liability/Termination of the completion
Lufthansa is released from all obligations upon delivery of the prizes and shall not be liable for any deficiencies concerning the prizes.
Lufthansa can in no way be held responsible for any loss or damage that may result from or occur in connection with the participation in the Competition or any transmission error or other technical difficulty, unless the loss or damage is caused by Lufthansa intentionally or through gross negligence. Unaffected by this remain damages due to loss of life, physical injury and damage to health.
Lufthansa reserve the right to change these Terms and Conditions at any time without prior notification and to terminate or interrupt the Competition at any time in case any difficulties occur that could comprise the integrity of the Competition and/or its proper execution.
Article 13: Underage participants in a competition
Underage users are allowed to participate within the Competition, but have no right to win the prize (see Article 4).
Article 14: Trademark rights/Copyright/Right of use
All trademarks, copyrights, database rights and other rights to the protection of intellectual property regarding the content of Lufthansa, together with the underlying software code, belong to either Lufthansa or its licensors. Without the prior written consent of Lufthansa, participants may not copy, modify, distribute, use or reproduce the Lufthansa content or the underlying software code in any form either in whole or in part.
Participants may use the Lufthansa microsite only in accordance with their applicable Terms of Use. In particular, each participant agrees to the following:
- You must not use the Lufthansa microsite in a way that is likely to infringe proprietary rights of others.
- You must not use any device, mechanism, software or other scripts that may interfere with the functionality of the Lufthansa microsite. This includes the uploading of files infected with viruses.
- You shall not take any action that could result in an unreasonable or excessive load on the Lufthansa infrastructure.
- You may not block, overwrite or modify any contents generated by Lufthansa, or in any way interfere with the Lufthansa microsite.
- You may not reproduce data from the Lufthansa Memory Network microsite, for commercial purposes. In particular, you may not copy, distribute, use or reproduce content found on the Lufthansa Memory Network microsite in any way using 'robots', other search technologies or other automatic mechanisms.
- You may not obtain or attempt to obtain unauthorised access to any of our networks by any means.
Article 15: Data Protection
The user may use the dedicated website of the “New Angles of America” campaign only if the user accepts these Terms and Conditions of Data Protection. The responsible party within the meaning of data protection law is Lufthansa.
All required data for participation is supplied voluntary by the participant. Lufthansa complies with all applicable legal data protection requirements. The data received by Lufthansa in connection with the Competition will be processed and saved for the purpose of the execution of this competition only. By accepting these Terms and Conditions you give your consent for your data to be collected, used and saved by Lufthansa for marketing purposes. The participant is always free to withdraw his/her consent to Lufthansa and thus to resign from participating in the competition.
By accepting these Terms and Conditions you further give your consent to the publication of the winner’s full name on the Lufthansa official channels.
Your personal information may be used in a manner consistent with the Privacy Policies of Lufthansa http://www.lufthansa.com/de/en/Privacy-statement.
Each user has the right to receive free information about the use of his or her personal data and, if applicable, the right to correct, block or delete his or her personal data, as well as the right to revoke consent to the storage of his or her personal data. Users may at any time contact Lufthansa to ask questions about the processing of user data, to request information, to correct, block or delete data, or to revoke consent.
Article 16: Applicable Law/Miscellaneous
The Competition is exclusively governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany. All decisions of Lufthansa are final. Legal recourse is expressly excluded. Any legal claim, including to challenge of provision, shall be brought in a court located in Germany.
Should any of these Terms and Conditions be or become invalid, the validity of the remaining parts shall not be affected.
This is Chuck O'Rear
If you've ever used a PC in your life you're almost certainly familiar with the photograph that changed Chuck O'Rear's life. The Bliss photo was bought for Windows XP's as a default background and has during the 16 years that the operating system was in use become the most seen image of all time.
It all began in January 1996 when he was on his way to see his girlfriend living outside of San Francisco. Suddenly he drove past a perfect motif in between the Palo Alto vineyards: a bright green hill and a clear blue sky behind it. He stopped the car immediately, jumped out with two cameras and the rest is history.
Chuck O'Rear is nature photographer based in North Carolina. During his long career he has traveled to almost every corner of the world for work and spent 25 years photographing for National Geographic.
